Image Of the Day caption:
WHOI Summer Student Fellow Mary Ann Lee, from Ohio Wesleyan University, carefully nets an adult squid in a holding tank. Lee spent summer 2013 at WHOI, working with biologist Aran Mooney studying how ocean acidification affects squid. Using digital video, she investigated whether newly hatched squid raised in seawater with lower-than-average pH (more acidic) had had better or worse swimming abilities than squid raised in seawater with normal pH. Poorer swimming ability could potentially make them more vulnerable to predation.
