Research Vessel Gosnold
In 1962, WHOI purchased the coastal vessel named Explorer from a marine salvage yard. To avoid confusion with other vessels with the same name, the vessel was christened Gosnold, to honor Captain Bartholomew Gosnold, the first European to land and settle in Woods Hole. Scientists used the 99-foot vessel for day trips and short cruises to collect cores, and for dredging and trawling work. At WHOI, Gosnold made 206 cruises, from Maine to South America and Bermuda.
