Image of The Day caption:
Jeremy Kaspar, a graduate student from the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, keeps a watchful eye on the sea ice crowding the Chukchi Sea in September 2003. Working aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy, researchers from WHOI and four other institutions spent six weeks deploying and recovering instruments as part of a three-year study of the layering and mixing of the seas north of Alaska and Canada. WHOI researchers have since continued and expanded such studies, and several expeditions will take place during the International Polar Year, which began on March 1.
