Engineering assistant Michael McCarthy (left) and senior engineering assistant Neil McPhee work to assemble the surface buoy for a GumbyMoor, a new mooring design that allows the line to stretch to twice its length in order to overcome the tug of swift currents and wild ocean weather. Recently, a mooring with this new design was deployed off of Grenada for a volcano-monitoring project.
