Image Of the Day caption:
During the austral summer of 2016, WHOI scientists Viviane Menezes and Alison Macdonald joined the crew of the research vessel R/V Roger Revelle and traveled north from Antarctica to Australia, braving frequent storms to collect water samples using an instrument called a CTD rosette--a cluster of 36 bottles surrounding conductivity, temperature, and pressure sensors. From the ship, scientists can close individual bottles at different depths and, once recovered, open the bottles and analyze the samples they contain to determine chemical properties of the water.
