Image of The Day caption:
Workers at Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding in Somerset, Mass., assemble the aluminum hull of the 60-foot coastal research vessel Tioga in the summer of 2003. The aluminum "longitudinals" in the frame are light--allowing the vessel to travel at high speed--yet strong enough to allow it to carry heavy scientific equipment or to maneuver in heavy seas. The WHOI-owned Tioga was put into the service of science four years ago this spring.
