Image of The Day caption:
Ocean-going research doesn't wait for holidays, so the science and ship crews take the holidays with them. On Christmas morning 2006, during an expedition to the East Pacific Rise, the crew found that presents had mysteriously appeared overnight under the tree. Did Santa and his elves find his way to the research vessel Atlantis in the middle of the Pacific Ocean?
R/V Atlantis Cruise AT15-14, Chief Scientist: Lauren Mullineaux.
November 11, 2006 to January 5, 2007
The two cruises in 2006 include a tracer release (first cruise) and survey (second cruise). The survey should be initiated roughly 40 days after release, so the 2 cruises need a 2-3 week separation between them.
