Image of The Day caption:
WHOI biologist Gareth Lawson (green shirt) and summer student fellow Jon Fincke reach to recover the Video Plankton Recorder (VPR), a towed underwater microscope that collects images of plankton. On a July 2010 research cruise south of Nantucket, Lawson and WHOI biologist Peter Wiebe used plankton nets, echosounders, and the VPR to study large aggregations of krill - animals vital to ocean food webs - in undersea canyons at the edge of the continental shelf.
