WHOI research assistant David Bailey checks the algae used to feed shellfish larvae that he grows in WHOI's Environmental Systems Lab. The shellfish are used by biologist Scott Lindell in his work on the diversification of local aquaculture. With a grant from the NOAA SeaGrant program, Lindell and Bailey are studying the effectiveness of "double cropping"growing mussels and sugar kelp together to provide an additional, sustainable stream of income to shellfishermen, and to create a more complex habitat in local aquaculture beds. "Diversification is a good thing, in nature as well as business," said Lindell.
