Image Of the Day caption:
WHOI postdoctoral investigator Andrea Bogomolni removes winter skates (a fish related to sharks and rays) from a gillnet on a fishing boat off Cape Cod, Mass. These skates were caught intentionally, but other species may be caught unintentionally as bycatch in fishing nets. Commercial fishers also have to contend with depredation—the loss of catch to seals and fish that eat commercial species out of fishing nets while they are still in the water. Bogolmoni and WHOI researcher Alex Bocconcelli are collaborating with local fishers and scientists at the Center for Coastal Studies to film these underwater interactions and hopefully find ways to prevent them.
