On a Cohen Lab cruise in the Caribbean aboard Pangaea Exploration’s Sea Dragon, WHOI scientists and MIT-WHOI graduate students were studying the link between changes in ocean circulation and coral growth. They found that changes in mixed layer depth associated with the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation had outsized effects on the rate of growth of Caribbean corals. These pillar corals (Dendrogyra cylindrus) were photographed in Curaçao, which had some of the healthiest reefs witnessed during that expedition. Pillar corals are endemic to the Caribbean and are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. (Photo by Pat
