Image of The Day caption:
The comb jelly, Thalassocalyce, is found in surface waters and midwater regions of the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, and sometimes in central California waters when warmer Pacific Ocean waters come inshore. Its bell-shaped body opens wide to capture prey.
Caption from Oceanus magazine, Vol. 45, No. 2, Pg. 8-9:
Among the small animals found on a tropical Atlantic cruise in April were (left to right) a transparent comb jelly, a reddish deep-sea squid, a jellyfish, and speckled globular colonies of single cells.
