Image Of the Day caption:
The 2017 WHOI Ocean Science Journalism Fellows listen as physical oceanographer Magdalena Andres describes one of the many scientific instruments she uses in her research: a pressure sensor equipped inverted echo sounder, or PIES. The device is lowered from a ship to the seafloor, where it measures the pressure, temperature, and salinity of the water above it. This spring, Andres deployed several PIESs on a cruise near Cape Hatteras, N.C., as part of the multi-year PEACH project to study recent variations in the Gulf Stream.
