Even a 9,438-ton ship is sometimes no match for Mother Nature. Two mammoth ice floes, one 2 to 2.5 kilometers in diameter and the other even larger, had sandwiched a smaller ice flow between them. The best route seemed to be the relatively thin intersection where the small floe touched one of its neighbors. But the floes were tightly compressed together, like pieces in one of those handheld jigsaw puzzles. Oden eased its bow into the intersection and got stuck for ~2 hours, until the ice and tides shifted, and the ice floes released their grip.
