Larsson is also a veteran of eight voyages to polar regions. His job is to keep track of ice conditions and find areas with thinner ice or open water to make Oden's odyssey as easy as possible. Winds and weather have large impacts on the ice pack. High- air pressure systems over the Arctic cause ice floes to move together, compacting them and making them less penetrable. Low- air pressure systems cause the floes to spread apart, creating leads that Oden can follow.
