The beginning of the Arctic Ocean sea ice did not arrive gradually, but in a sudden straight line, separating open ocean from the ice pack. Bertil Larsson, Oden's onboard meteorologist and ice expert, explained why it was so straight. The winds were blowing from the south, pushing thin ice that had formed this past winter against thick ice farther north that never melts and grows thicker and harder, year by year. Imagine pushing checkerboard pieces against a wall with a ruler.
