Even from Oden's bridge, seven stories high, the ship's crew can only see so far ahead, especially when fog rolls in. So the ship depends on its helicopter to scout ahead. Several times a day, depending on weather and ice conditions, a ship's officer and helicopter pilot conduct reconnaissance missions to search for leads, or open water passages, in the ice. Oden's second officer, Thomas Stromsnas (left), and pilot Geir Akse seem to have a found a fairly large lead ahead.
