Tupper, an engineer at WHOI, has been deploying and retrieving CTDs for decades throughout the world's ocean-but never before in the Arctic. The region poses several problems he never encountered before. For example, sensors on the CTDs are susceptible to malfunction if they freeze. So Tupper and Christian Stranne from the University of Goteborg continually had to fetch buckets of warm water to pour on the sensors to prevent them from freezing.
