Here's another problem that Tupper never encountered before today-having to make a hole in ice to deploy the CTD and then keeping that hole open for a long time. Oden's water jets once again came in handy. A strong winch on Oden's bow lowered the CTD and reeled it back up via a cable at a speed of about 60 meters per minute. The hole had to be maintained for several hours to sample waters several thousand meters below the surface.
