Soon perhaps, Camper will be used to explore an Arctic hydrothermal vent. In the meantime, the new system was lowered 4,000 meters to the Arctic Ocean seafloor early Saturday morning for a test dive to iron out bugs. "You build something from scratch and try to do something new and-no surprises-something doesn't work right the first time," said WHOI engineer John Bailey (at right, with John Kemp), who designed and built Camper. "But we have ideas about how to fix things, and we have the tools, and we have the personnel who know how to get things done."
