After two hours on an ice floe setting up equipment, "it's time for a picnic," said pilot Sven Stenvall, who brought out sandwiches, hot tea, and a treat: reindeer jerky. Red-painted wooden slats make a fine cutting board, but that's not their real function. Because there is no contrast or shadows on the ice, pilots drop the boards onto ice floes as they get close to landing to give them a sense of where the "ground" is. Before landing, the pilots bounce the helicopter's rubber pontoons on ice floes a few times, bunny-hopping on it to ensure that the floe won't crack before they turn off the engine.
