WHOI engineers built three new vehicles to search for hydrothermal vents beneath the Arctic Ocean. The first two are sleek, torpedo-shaped, free-swimming robots called Puma and Jaguar. The third is a 6,200-pound box-5 feet wide, 7 feet long, and 5.5 feet tall- called Camper. Describing the vehicles, WHOI engineer Hanu Singh referenced the old Clint Eastwood film that was being shown that night in Oden's small cinema. "I can't tell which one of the vehicles will be good or bad," he said, "but I do know which one is ugly."
