Maria Tausendfreund is taking a water sample from a melt pond on an Arctic ice floe, which she will later analyze to see if and what microbes may be living in it. Since 2003, she has studied at the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven, Germany, where she is pursuing a master's degree in bioanalytics. "I had chosen to pursue earth sciences because I believe that there are a lot of interesting and undetected organisms, or even their produced substances, in our environment, which can be very useful for our future life. I would like to do marine research with an eye on the development of new drugs in the 'fight' against different illnesses. ...The only sad thing about our work on board is that we only can prepare the samples from the CDT or the Camper for home and haven`t any results immediately."
