To snatch Puma after it surfaced, Oden's small boat, Hugin was lowered by crane into the icy ocean. (The boat is named after one of the two ravens that perched on the Norse god Oden's shoulders.) Puma is equipped with a sound beacon used by people caught in avalanches to call for help. WHOI engineer Cliff Pontbriand hands up a receiver for the avalanche beacon to WHOI engineer John Kemp, who roamed on Oden's fantail to get signals from Puma. The receiver beeps louder as you get closer to the beacon. Kemp kept scientists and crew on Oden's bridge informed of Puma's location.
