Image of The Day caption:
Captain Bill Chaprales of Cape Cod Shark Hunters prepares to tag a white shark off Chatham, Mass., in 2010. Captain Chaprales has worked with biologists Simon Thorrold, director of WHOI's Ocean Life Institute, and Greg Skomal (Massachusetts Marine Fisheries) for a number of years to study movement patterns of sharks and tunas in the northwest Atlantic. New satellite-based tagging studies are showing that basking sharks and white sharks, seasonal residents of the waters around Cape Cod during the summer, move as far as the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, respectively, during winter months.
