A boat lies on a beach in Vineyard Haven Harbor after Hurricane Carol, a category 3 storm, hit the New England coast in August 1954. Hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean officially started on June 1st. NOAA's 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook calls for an 85% chance of an above normal season.
