An Inupiat guide, armed with a rifle, stands watch at a tent near Point Barrow, Alaska, in which WHOI technicians perform acoustic surveys of sea ice and the Arctic Ocean beneath it. Note the tracks in the snow, made by an 11-foot-tall polar bear that approached the tent but turned away after the guide confronted it.
