Kristin Pangallo, a graduate student in the MIT/WHOI Joint Program, flame-seals a test tube while preparing samples for the National Ocean Sciences Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (NOSAMS) in February 2006. Located on the WHOI campus, NOSAMS was established with support from the National Science Foundation to provide analyses of carbon-14 at natural abundance levels in the ocean.
