Image Of the Day caption:
WHOI engineers Stephen Murphy and John Kemp (holding flashlight) assemble end-pieces for mooring cables destined to be used in the Ocean Observatory Iniative. The hollow stainless steel tubes are electromechanical terminations for moorings, housing electrical connections that enable submerged ocean-monitoring instruments to transmit data from the depths to the surface and, via satellite, to scientists around the world. Murphy and Kemp are using a level to check the volumes of urethane, poured into the ends to keep the terminations waterproof.
