The root of the problem.
Bahia Honda, Panama—WHOI biologist Jesús Pineda began a study in March of a coastal mangrove stand where (in contrast to many mangrove ecosystems) larvae of mollusks and crustaceans are unusually scarce. He is exploring a theory that naturally occurring chemicals from rainforest leaves kill the larvae. The study site is the new Liquid Jungle Lab, built by businessman Jean Pigozzi to host tropical research by scientists from WHOI and other institutions.
