Image Of the Day caption:
R/V Albatross III first sailed under the name Harvard for the North Atlantic Fishery Investigations in Woods Hole. In 1941, the ship was rebuilt, renamed Bellefonte and used by the U.S. Navy as a patrol boat during World War II. Researchers used the vessel intermittently upon its return to Woods Hole in 1944, then under the name Albatross III. The ship made a total of 128 scientific cruises , all in the North Atlantic. Most were fisheries investigations, but many included oceanographic work, particularly between 1951 and 1952, when WHOI borrowed the ship.
