Research Vessel Crawford
Crawford, a former U.S. Coast Guard cutter, came to WHOI in 1956. Crawford made 175 cruises, worked in the North and South Atlantic, and carried specialized gear for studying hurricanes. Oceanographers used the vessel for working on hydrographic stations and in long-line fishing studies. One novel experiment attempted aboard Crawford in the early 1960s included adding an airplane wing on the port side of the ship to expand space. (It was unsuccessful.) In 1970, WHOI sold Crawford to the University of Puerto Rico, where the vessel continued to work for oceanographers.
