When one of the big ships is in port during heavy weather, they get all the best points on the dock to tie off. Standard practice calls for two bow lines, two stern lines, two spring lines (one leading forward and one aft), and perhaps two breast lines to keep the ship close to the pier. To prepare for Hurricane Sandy, however, "You have to do more," said A.D. Colburn, master of R/V Atlantis. "That means look for more bollards!" Three additional long lines plus doubled short lines provided extra security and permitted Atlantis and crew to safely ride out the wind, waves, and four-foot storm surge.
