The fourth member of the Camper team is engineer John Bailey, a 16-year WHOI veteran specializing in equipment and electronics. When he's not building and fixing things, he likes to fly model airplanes, which doesn't hurt his hand-eye coordination skills when he's flying vehicles miles below the ocean surface. His technical expertise, combined with Forte's operational skill, and Humphris's and Shank's geochemical and biological knowledge make for an exceptional team. "Plus, every one of us have a lot of seagoing experience," he said. "Seeing things go up and over, and lashed down, is second nature to all of us."
