While scientists sought ways to communicate with Jaguar and recover it from the seafloor, others performed routine maintenance on not-so-routine vehicles. Remember photographer Chris Linder sacrificing his camera flash unit for parts for Jaguar? "This is my wife's contribution to science," said WHOI engineer John Bailey: her hair dryer. "I didn't know what to expect up here," he said. "Sometimes when the rubber connectors (on the Camper vehicle) get cold, they don't sit right. You have to warm them up, but if you use too much heat, you can melt them." His wife's hair dryer is the perfect device for maintenance of a one-of-a-kind deep-sea camera and sampling system. In case you were wondering, "she got a new one," Bailey said, "a turbo-charged one."
