Image of The Day caption:
Sentry, a new autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) built by engineers at WHOI, is loaded onto the R/V Tioga for testing operations during December 2007. The free-swimming underwater robot, which is designed to dive as deep as 5,000 meters (3.1 miles), completed its first scientific mission in August 2008, mapping the seafloor off the coast of Washington state. Sentry is the successor to ABE, the Autonomous Benthic Explorer, a pioneering free-swimming robot launched in 1995.
