WHOI staff members participating in Capitol Hill briefing with Congressional and Senate staff. In addition to highlighting the value and importance of scientific exploration to understand the changes occurring in our ocean, throughout the day they underscored the need for the Phase II upgrade to enable Alvin to reach 6500-meter depths, as well as for continued and increased federal support for research.

David Gallo, Director of Special Projects at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, addressed members of the U.S. House of Representatives at a reception to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the HOV Alvin. He joined other WHOI scientists in discussions with lawmakers about the importance ocean science research and engineering to our economy and environment. Gallo was among six recipients awarded for the Lowell Thomas medal for "imagination in exploration" by The Explorers Club in California on October 11.
