Liviu Giosan and colleagues extract a sediment core from a marsh to find clues to the evolution and past climate of the Danube Delta. An XRF scan of a sediment core from offshore Venezuela (not shown here) combines a digital photograph (brown) with an X-ray image (gray and black) that reveals sedimentary layers otherwise invisible to the naked eye. The concentration of titanium (overlaid in yellow) indicates past fluctuations in atmospheric moisture and dust in the region.
