WHOI research associate Terry Hammar works to attach some lead weights to a release mechanism beneath the 'dog dish' in preparation for testing the new "long core" system on the R/V Knorr. The "dog dish"?so named for its shape?contains all the control mechanisms used to sense the sea floor and release the piston corer at the desired height off the bottom.
