WHOI research assistant Paul Henderson readied some of more than 600 filters for shipment to Ecuador in September 2013. Henderson and Falmouth High School student Andrew Franks spent more than 200 hours preparing the filters to measure naturally occuring radium isotopes on a 57-day cruise between South America and Fijico-led by WHOI geologist Chris German. The cruise is is part of GEOTRACES, an international program to better understand biogeochemical cycles and large-scale distribution of trace elements in the global ocean.
