Three Pacific white-sided dolphins sped alongside the research vessel Atlantis during an October 2006 transit along the Oregon coast. "A school of perhaps 200 of them surrounded us for a half-hour, matching our speed and surfing our bow wake," said able seaman Lance Wills, a relief crewmember for the WHOI-operated ship. "They streaked through the water like torpedoes and leapt into the air like ballerinas."
R/V Atlantis Cruise AT15-14, Chief Scientist: Lauren Mullineaux.
November 11, 2006 to January 5, 2007
The two cruises in 2006 include a tracer release (first cruise) and survey (second cruise). The survey should be initiated roughly 40 days after release, so the 2 cruises need a 2-3 week separation between them.
