No, that's not a typo, just the effects of a Boston accent pronouncing Earth's upper polar region. On an Arctic ice floe, crack helicopter pilot Sven Stenvall and Polar Discovery's crack photographer Chris Linder display the flag of the Museum of Science, Boston, where a general public lecture on this expedition will be held at 2:30 p.m. E.T. on Aug. 8. Via a satellite phone link, the audience will be able to ask scientists aboard the Oden questions about the research cruise and the Arctic. Funded by the National Science Foundation and the Richard King Mellon Foundation, Polar Discovery has held a dozen live talks at museums around the country (as well as two talks at the Teknikens Hus museum in Sweden) during this expedition for general audiences and more specialized ones such as teacher workshops. Scientists also were interviewed live on National Public Radio's "Science Friday" program.
