Linder (left), a graduate student at the Alfred-Wegener Institute, shares the backseat of Oden's helicopter with a pile of seismometers, batteries, bamboo poles, and shovels. Before the expedition, Schlindwein and Linder spent months perfecting their packing so they could safely transport an entire earthquake-monitoring array inside a helicopter in a single trip. What they give up in room, they save in expensive helicopter fuel by not having to make multiple trips from the icebreaker to the ice.
