For this expedition, WHOI engineers, led by Hanu Singh (above), developed three new vehicles designed to work in ice-covered oceans: the free-swimming robotic vehicles Puma and Jaguar and a vehicle tethered to a fiber-optic cable, Camper, to collect video and samples from the seafloor. The scientists also developed and tested a novel acoustic communications system to navigate the vehicles. "We knew the (robotic) vehicles had a very real chance of failing, and even being lost under the ice," Reves-Sohn said. "You can plan and plan and plan, but you don't know what will happen until you actually do it. Camper worked fabulously well. We launched Puma and Jaguar eight times, got them to go all the way to the bottom five times to run science missions, got them to return to small holes in the ice, and got them back every time." Other aborted vehicle dives still provided useful engineering data on how to improve deep-sea vehicle operations in the ice pack, he said.
