Tim Stanton and Cynthia Sellers were testing Stanton's low frequency broadband acoustic system on the dock, getting it ready to go to sea.
Image of The Day caption:
WHOI scientist Tim Stanton and research associate Cynthia Sellers return a broadband imaging sonar to its storage box after putting it through its paces in the test well on the WHOI dock in Woods Hole. The sonar is like a very sophisticated fish-finder. It emits a wide range of low-frequency signals, which reflect or scatter off animals and objects in characteristic ways. By analyzing the echoes, Stanton and his research team can detect and identify a variety of organisms including different species of fish and zooplankton. The test well allows scientists to make sure instruments are working properly before heading to sea. Stanton and Sellers were preparing for a research cruise in September to the Georges Bank.
