Riftia tube worms (Riftia pachyptila) are part of a rich tapestry of life at a hydrothermal vent in the Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California. WHOI scientists Anna Michel and Scott Wankel and research engineer Jason Kapit led an expedition to the basin to test a new deep-sea methane sensor. “In the deep ocean rising plumes of methane provide energy to fuel pockets of vibrant life,” says Michel. “Bacteria, bivalves, tubeworms, and other creatures cluster together in unique ecosystems, thriving on methane and other chemicals.”
