Image of The Day caption:
WHOI Senior Scientist Susan Humphris, Board of Trustees Chairman Newt Merrill and Director Susan K. Avery (left to right) followed in the footsteps of British Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton during an October expedition to South Georgia Island. Avery and Humphris gave science presentations aboard the M/V Plancius to 100 fellow travelers during a 13-day cruise. The group visited some of the worlds' largest breeding grounds for penguins, elephant seals, albatross, and southern fur seals and received a unique, close-up view of one of the most remote corners of the world.
