Image Of the Day caption:
Senior welder Geoffrey Ekblaw welds a seam on a titanium main junction box for the new Alvin. The human-occupied research submersible is undergoing a comprehensive upgrade, including a new frame and personnel sphere, that will extend the sub's reach into the depths of the world's oceans. Alvins two main junction boxes, one on each side, are critical to the vehicles electrical system. While some parts of the sub, such as the sphere, were made elsewhere, many of the parts are being made, and almost all of the assembly is being done, here at WHOI.
