Main Street at Cape Crozier is a three-lane, 1-kilometer thoroughfare of snow smoothed to an even finish by the trampling of little penguin feet. Dirty penguins smeared with guano and regurgitated food wind down the highway (sometimes sliding on their bellies). They're on their way out to find food, along the way passing bright, clean penguins fresh out of the water.

In Antarctica, where researchers study penguins, Main Street is a three-lane, 1-kilometer thoroughfare of snow smoothed to an even finish by the trampling of little penguin feet, wrote Hugh Powell in 2007 in an online dispatch (photos by WHOI's Chris Linder). They were on their way out to find food, along the way passing bright, clean penguins fresh out of the water.
