Image of The Day caption:
Scientists working in Antarctica on sea ice in the Weddell Sea are frequently visited by penguins. These were checking up on WHOI Associate Scientist Hanu Singh and his team - Clay Kunz, Chris Murphy, Derya Akkaynak and Jeff Pietro - who are currently in the Southern Ocean with a British Antarctic Survey expedition on the RRS James Clark Ross to map sea-ice thickness from below using the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) SeaBED and also from above using a 3D laser scanner. The WHOI team will be at sea until early December, making their way into the Bellingshausen Sea.
